Summer 2010 Musical Discussion
Okay. Start throwing them in here. Please remember that you should only recommend a show that you have read and researched. Don't forget to sign your post. :)
SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS - After our (amazing) dabble into contemporary theatre with Urinetown, I think it would be good to give a shout-out to a classic next year.
"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" is a lively, fun, family-friendly show with great opportunity for some amazing choreography. Fairly simple set requirements, although a decent amount of furniture would be required for the Brothers' house scenes. Medium to large sized cast. And the score has some pretty catchy songs that refuse to leave your head. Being such a well-known classic, it would attract a wide audience.
I think 7 Brides is a good idea for using our high school and college students who like doing the summer musical. The show I would most like to do, however, is South Pacific. I know everybody says there are too many men in the cast, but I think we could do it. It was revived on Broadway last year and was very successful. To me, the music and message are timeless. I would even like to direct if I had someone to help with music and choreography. Of course, I know having more than one director can sometimes be a problem.
Just thought I'd mention that Josh Cartee would be happy to direct the music and be rehearsal accompanist on South Pacific. Please keep an open mind and consider this great show.
I ,personally, think I might hang myself if we do 7 Brides... what about beauty and the beast.. i seen that done a while back.. it was really good..
maybe ever Nifty Fifties... we did it back in 98 and it went over really well
Gracie Stanley has gotten herself in hot water by promising to deliver her distant cousin, rock star Ziggy Springer, for the high school Hippity Hop, being held in Louise's Luncheonette. Ziggy's manager doesn't want his client performing anywhere without pay, so Gracie and her friends have to produce a double--and fast! They use a singing soda jerk and plan to have him perform in the dark! It won't be easy for Gracie to get away with this one with her rival, snooty Muffin Mansfield, waiting for her to flop. Meanwhile, Louise has her own problems. The building's owner forbids the dance and plans to turn the eatery into a dry cleaner. With all of this happening, Gracie's brother is living in terror because he's smashed up a Harley belonging to Sinbad Gallucci, a bad dude. There are fun roles to play, with everything from students to beatniks. This is a one set, easy to stage musical comedy that will have your audiences cheering. Included in the sensational Francoeur fifties score: "Bop-A-Lu-Bop Dance Party," "Teen Queen," "It's Tough To Be a Teenager In Love," the hilarious "It Was The Blob," and, of course, the toe-tapping title tune. (Also available as a one-act musical.) Bop-A-Lu-Bop Dance Party It's Tough To Be a Teenager in Love Rock Around the Block Teen Queen The Nifty Fifties
I'd like to do a show with a little more depth than Nifty Fifties, such as My Fair Lady or Oliver. However, maybe I'm not being realistic. My first choice is still South Pacific, but I would be enthusiastic about any show with some substance.
I also would like to see us do something with a little more depth than Nifty Fifties. I think both 7 Brides and South Pacific are great choices. Grease is also well known and might be a good choice considering all the teens and young adults we have. I really don't think it would be too raunchy. -Denise
It seems to me that if we have enough men to do 7 Brides and Grease, we have enough guys to do almost any show. I vote for South Pacific first, 2nd choice - 7 Brides, 3rd choice - Grease.
We still do not have a director confirmed for the summer musical. We are trying to hold off a decision on the show to consult with the director. If one isn't found by the March 7th Board Meeting, we will choose a show anyway and then pursue a director.

grease is always an option... we have the talent..
ReplyDeleteGrease would be fun! But keep in mind it's pretty raunchy. I think 7 Brides would also be very entertaining and well received by the public.
